Herbs: Your Culinary Garden

Herb-Planters1

Growing fresh culinary herbs is a simple way of adding extra layers of flavour and excitement to home-cooked meals, with most recipes calling for small amounts of these aromatic plants. Le Creuset’s Herb Planters are the perfect way to kick-start your own culinary garden, ensuring that you always have a variety of wonderfully fresh accents on-hand to season any dish.

While herbs are low maintenance, they are not no maintenance. It is important to invest a little bit of time and effort in their upkeep. To this effect, parsley, rosemary and thyme are all hardy plants and make an especially good choice for a starter garden.

Top Tips:

  • Buy healthy plants from your local nursery, avoiding scraggly-looking herbs.
  • Plant in rich, well-drained soil and water deeply only as needed.
  • Fertilise several times during the growing season.
  • Make sure your herbs get the right amount of sun (most require full sun or at least 6 hours of sunlight).

The following are some of the more commonly grown favourites:

Parsley: Available in flat- or curly-leaf varieties, parsley can be used as an ingredient or garnish. Mildly bitter, it adds balance to mostly any savoury dish.

Thyme: Thyme has a subtle, dry aroma and is often included in seasoning blends for poultry and stuffing. It also pairs well with lamb, tomatoes and lemon.

Rosemary: This small evergreen sprig packs a pungent pine-like fragrance. It lends a wonderful flavour to chicken, pork and potatoes.

Fennel: Fennel imparts a light, fresh and crunchy taste which is strikingly reminiscent of liquorice and anise. The fronds are typically used in salads.

Basil: Depending on the variety, basil leaves may taste somewhat like anise, with a strong and often sweet smell. It is popular in many Italian dishes, and can liven up any pasta sauce.

Mint: The jagged leaves of mint are highly prized for their cool burst of flavour. They are perfect paired with lamb, or combined with chocolate.
